Standup Paddleboarding on Stockton Beach and Birubi

I love a SUP day on Birubi Point beach with friends. Having your 4x4 on right on the beach, pulling out the picnic rug and SUPs and settling in for the day is just magic. The whole area is part of the Worimi Conservation Lands and a 4x4 permit is required to access the beach. Permits cost around $30 annually and can be purchased from many places outlined on the Worimi website including the BP Petrol Station at Anna Bay. Make sure you adhere to all the conditions including not driving on the fore dunes.

Beach access is via Gan Gan Rd Anna Bay or Lavis Lane at Williamtown. The sand at the entry points is very soft so it is important to deflate your tyres and have some knowledge of beach driving before you take to the beach.

Birubi Point, at the  Anna Bay end of the beach is very popular for both surfers and those on a SUP. The best spots are not to far from the patrolled swimming areas so keep an eye out that you don’t drift to far into the flagged area. The Surf Life Saving Association opened their new clubhouse and facilities in 2014 and it houses a fab little café called Crest which offers great coffee and meals. It can get busy if you want to eat in the restaurant so you may need to book.

Birubi is increasing in popularity with Surf SUPers so you’ll often see others out catching a wave. The surf break is great but can be a bit dependent on the tides and swell direction. When the tide is too low or high often its difficult to get on a wave, however with more than 20kms of beach there are plenty of options further along the beach. Another little Port Stephens gem - hope we see you there sometime! Shoal Bay SUP located near the boat ramp at Shoal Bay offers day hires that means even if you dont have your own SUP you can give it a go at Birubi.
